To help provinces and territories ensure kids can safely go back to school next month; the federal government is giving them $2 billion. Tomorrow, Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister, will make the announcement at a school in Toronto. In helping them cope with the continuing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their economies and health care systems, the money will be on top of the $19 billion that Trudeau promised provinces and territories.
During a conference call Tuesday afternoon, the prime minister informed premiers of his plans. The reports were confirmed by people who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss details before the announcement. The aid will be distributed based on every province and territory’s number of students.
The sources indicated that Trudeau will fully respect the fact that education is a provincial jurisdiction. As provinces and territories see fit to bolster their efforts to make sure that schools can reopen this fall as safely as possible, they will be able to spend the money. Since COVID-19 began spreading across the country in mid-March, schools have been shut down across the country.
