A number of scandals and controversies have plagued Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government in Canada. Some go back a few years.
Apparently, it started in late 2017 when Trudeau had issues with the ethics commissioner over a vacation stay at the Aga Khan’s private island. Why is this a problem. Because the Aga Khan’s foundation is a registered lobbyist and the entity had received millions from the federal government.
Next came a trip to India a few months later. Trudeau had dressed in a local costume which was found rather comical to Indian officials. It was not the biggest blow to his reputation. That ensued in 2019 during an election campaign. Photos of the prime minister in blackface shocked the world. Of course he was appropriately sorry.
“It was something that I didn’t think was racist at the time, but now
I recognize it was something racist to do and I am deeply sorry.”
There has even been a groping allegation. A report alleged in 2018 that Trudeau groped her at a fundraiser at the Kokanee Summit in British Columbia. According to the “victim”,
“The incident did occur. Mr. Trudeau did apologize the next day. I did
not pursue the incident at the time. I have had no subsequent contact with
Mr. Trudeau, before or after he became Prime Minister.”
Trudeau of course is not pleased with the scandal news mongering and resurrecting old stories. He defends himself saying he did not act inappropriately.
“…people experience interactions differently… women, experience
interactions in professional contexts differently than men.”
It does not end here. SNC-Lavalin, a Liberal-connected firm in Quebec, was facing charges over alleged bribes to Libyan officials. They wanted a Deferred Prosecution Agreement with the government to avoid criminal charges. In the end, they had to stand trial. An investigation confirmed inappropriate actions by the prime minister and several staff members.
One recent scandal has to do with the WE charity that was supposed to take on pandemic relief. It is said that Trudeau had personal connections with the group and was involved in the decision making process. In fact, several family members have been paid by WE. Trudeau’s mother received $250,000 for speaking engagements. His brother also garnered $32,000.
But the latest problem for Trudeau is a connection to a Toronto real estate developer, Wei Wei. He has been charged with running an illegal casino inside a suburban mansion.
Trudeau and Wei met at least twice in 2016. The businessman was part of a Chinese government-endorsed industry delegation.
A member of this group donated one million to the Trudeau foundation. The Liberal party has since reformed their fundraising rules.
It’s a long list of accusations and occurrences but they are in the past and should be buried.
